2009 was probably one of the band's busiest years yet. We kicked off the year with the brilliant Massed Bands in Concert 2009, which saw our friends l'Elan Saumurois visit and perform in the concert. Their different style of performance added so much to the concert. We had a brilliant Spring with lots of fetes and parades to perform at, including our own Moors Valley Run. In May, we were officially declared the 'Wimborne Town Band' by Cllr Robin Cook.
Before long, Summer had arrived. We had an excellent Kingsbridge Camp, the weather wasn't the best, but we've had worse!
This was followed by the sudden and tragic loss of a great band member and leader, Ben James, who was a member of DYMB for many years and has contributed so much. Ben will never be forgotten by those who knew him and will live on through the music he loved.
The carnival season was busy (as with every year). We were out most weekends performing to onlookers throughout the South of England. Soon, Christmas had arrived and we performed through our busiest ever December.
2009 was a truly unforgettable year for the band. It's time to take 2010 head on with the first event of the year, Massed Bands in Concert 2010!
Christmas in Wimborne Square - Thursday 24th December 2009
The Dorset Youth Marching Band have been asked by the Town Mayor, Cllr Mr J Burden, to perform in Wimborne Square as we were so well received in 2008. We set up in the square and began playing our cheery Christmas tunes and marching pieces. Despite the rain and cold, the members persevered in aid of the Mayor's Charities. We were in the square for around 4 hours, with regular breaks for hot drinks of course!
The band had great fun today and has certainly been put in the mood for the day to follow!
After Christmas, the band will be busy preparing for Massed Bands in Concert 2010, so be sure to keep your eye on the site for more information.
Members of the percussion section and Management Committee were out in force at the famous Wimborne Market on the first two Sundays of December. Playing plenty of Festive Tunes and and array of other tunes, the performers entertained the Market.
Thank you to the collectors and performers for turning out on two bitterly cold Sundays to collect funds for the band.
Busking in Wimborne Square - Saturday 19th December 2009
We, Wimborne's Town Band, were asked by the Wimborne Chamber of Trade to perform in Wimborne Square. We arrived at 10:00 and set up ready to play. Before long we were marching back and forth, blasting out some powerful marching pieces and cheery festive songs, much to the delight of onlookers.
We were playing in the Square for a few hours and stopped for refreshments and hot drinks throughout the day. The whole band enjoyed playing to the onlookers and are looking forward to more of the same when we return to The Square on Christmas Eve.
Wimborne Save the Children Parade - Saturday 12th December 2009
DYMB, Wimborne's Town Band, turned up in full uniform ready to lead the Save the Children Parade through the streets of our home town, Wimborne Minster. There were huge numbers of floats and walking attractions for all to see.
The Town Crier started the parade off and we marched our way towards the town centre, where we blasted out some very powerful tunes to the masses that had gathered. The Christmas Spirit was definitely in the air as we marched through the town!
Soon we had finished the parade and stopped for a hot drink and some mince pies and biscuits, before heading out again to play on the High Street. We marched back and forth, playing an array of marching pieces, with festive tunes thrown into the mix for twenty minutes or so, before it was time to march off and head home.
Today's performance has made Wimborne proud. The Quarterjeracks have just three more events before the end of 2009, so lets see more of the same!
