InformationHere you can find out information about the band itself. Take a read through and if you find that you want to know more please don't hesitate to contact us by e-mailing info@dymb.org. Where do we meet? We meet at Queen Elizabeth's School in Wimborne on Wednesday evenings from 7.00pm through until 9.30pm. If you're interested in joining, pop along and see what we get up to. You can speak to the leaders and members to find out more if you want! What do we do? The clue's in the title! We're a military style marching band. We perform in a variety of events, mostly comprising of Carnivals and Fetes. During the Summer it's mostly fetes, and Autumn it's carnivals! We also go camping in Devon for a weekend during July and since 2006 we've been making annual trips to France for a week. This has proved to be particularly popular with the members! We teach all our members how to march, play, clean their instruments etc (unless they already know of course!) and everything else they need to know to be part of the band. What history does the band have? We originated in 1970 as a Scout Band, starting as a pipe band, but quickly changed to the B Flat Bugle Traditional Youth Marching Band we are today. Entry to the Band was then limited to Scouts and in the late eighties younger boys and girls were accepted. The Band grew in strength and numbers over the years winning competitions, toured Normandy, France in 1984 and 1995, Germany and Luxembourg in 2001 gaining a wide reputation for its discipline and smartness. Many new national events have been undertaken such as leading 125 bands in a Marching Youth Celebration of the 40th Anniversary of the Queens Succession to the Throne, leading the Tall Ships Race Procession through Weymouth and playing along side Forces Bands Beating the Retreat, as well at Carnivals, Opening Ceremonies and at Remembrance Day Parades. As well as our variety of national events, we also have an international presence. We have toured Luxembourg, Germany & France and we make annual trips to France where we have developed a close relationship with Avenir Allonnais (a band in the Saumur area of France). We have a varied cross section of young people within our membership, which ranges from 8 to 21 years. Young people of all abilities are welcome in the Band as full tuition is provided together with instruments, uniform and transport. Our devoted Leaders endeavour to provide an extended family atmosphere for all Band members thus helping them to achieve their own personal goals. As an independent registered Charity the Executive Committee, relatives and friends of the Band spend many hours fund-raising to meet the needs of the Charity. Recruitment is ongoing thus ensuring a full Band to meet the requirements of events booked 12 to 18 months in advance. |
